Defendants with Lizzie Grubman-sized legal problems tend to seek out Stephen P. Scaring.
As one Long Island executive put it, “When the media has convicted you and the case hasn’t even gotten out of the jury pool room yet, drop a dime and get Scaring over to the courthouse pronto.”
Scaring, a sole practitioner in Garden City, is a former assistant district attorney in Nassau County and a former special prosecutor in Suffolk County.
But he’s far better known for defending Grubman, and before that, a Nassau developer who faced a murder charge, and Dave DeBusschere, a former New York Knicks basketball player who was acquitted of DWI fter Scaring subpoenaed his Breathalyzer.
The problem in representing high profile clients, Scaring said, is controlling public opinion surrounding them. “It’s difficult to comment often times because it might impact on the perception of the case,” he said.
Scaring said he’s never been interested in working for a big firm or rising to managing partner. “I wanted to keep a small practice, stay intimately involved and be selective,” he said.
Scaring received his bachelor’s degree from C.W. Post and his juris doctorate from the Catholic University of America.
